The Town of Amherst in Erie County, NY is seeking an experienced professional to serve as a Principal Planner. The work involves performing and managing higher level planning projects and functions, including preparing grant applications and overseeing the work of employees and consultants in the preparation of major planning studies; supervising the preparation of concept and master plans for the physical development of local or regional areas; insuring that the development of plans and programs is done in accordance with applicable Federal, State and local laws and guidelines; representing the Town Planning Department at meetings and providing technical assistance relating to design, planning and zoning; and carrying out specific administrative functions in the Town Planning Department.
Candidates must possess comprehensive knowledge of the principles, objectives and techniques in the field of local and regional planning; thorough knowledge of planning implementation techniques and systems, including capital budgeting; experience using ESRI GIS and other software involved in analyses and graphics preparation and presentation; strong knowledge of and ability to effectively use general planning analysis techniques; strong knowledge of conventional planning research methodologies; ability to critically evaluate and analyze plans and documents, and strong ability to present plans and projects, both orally and in writing.
The position requires graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four (4) year college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in architecture, economics, environmental studies, geography, landscape architecture, municipal government, political science, public administration, urban or regional planning, and four (4) years of experience in City, County or regional planning with a minimum of one (1) year of responsible supervisory experience; or graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four (4) year college or university with a Master’s Degree in planning, geography, landscape architecture or related field, and two (2) years of experience in City, County or regional planning with a minimum of one (1) year of responsible supervisory experience.
